Description

Aloha Everyone!! This is another shot of the newly formed beach Kaimu. I waited around a couple of hours shooting some more waves just having a ball. I'm standing pretty much in the wave line here trying to shoot into the curl. Like they say on TV...."Don't try this at home". The "Shoot and run like hell" method is not recommended, because sooner or later the inevitable will happen. I was lucky this day, just got my shorts wet, and managed to avoid a smashing. The wave heights in Hawaii are measured from the back of the wave. So a 3' wave from the back might have a face of 4-6' depending on swell and wind direction, current, tide, and many other variables. I would guesstimate this wave face at 5-6'. So a 5' person could stand up straight in this wave face. Not the best place to pose for a picture, but you get the idea. Thanks for your kind comments on my last wave post....and yes, I'm still way behind on comments..but I'm gaining on them....much Aloha to all!!

Be careful my friend. More people got caught and lost their lives in waves than on the lava field. Beautiful shot that one don't see often. Excellent job. Aloha

that's a scary photo! I've been on the bad end of surf in my time - the biggest I've ridden was 9' (measured properly at the back as you mention) from the front that's enormous - it's like a house coming towards you. In 4 hours I caught 2 waves and was absolutely exhausted. Your photo's remind me of those days, now I don't have such a death wish! Fantastic image.

Dave, you've done it again! The almost mysterious light inside the curl illuminates the power of this wave. Your eye and timing is right on!
