Its good but focus not quite there for me. IMO. Maybe a speedlight would help sharpen it if lighting wasnt correct? apperature at F2.8? Maybe change it. Just idea as setting seem okay. Canon 400D amazing how they just keep bringing them out.Have a lovely day my friend and keep smiling:))))))))

Agree with Dianthus...if the focus was on, this would be an utterly awesome macro!!! I look at your settings...why f2.8?...no depth of field with the lens so wide open.

Hmmm I do see Joes reason for using the 2.8 with such magnification and all you kinda need to open it up for the light.... seems this was shot in the shade? thus the ISO of 200 and the other setting... :-? Oh well in many ways I actualy like this one and the way it turned out!!! Keep the shots comming buddy... Oh and if you aren't happy with the 400d... send it my way LOL ;P haha... catch ya later

I understand your dismay...It is quite dark...but I don't know enough to start giving advice...Sorry...All I can say is,I still like it very much. It's very mooooooooody and highly dramatic and unusual, and that alone makes it special.....Hmmm...Maybe this is a ...D.A.R.K.....D.R.A.G.O.N.... LOL. ;^) Have a great week,my friend...and thanks for all your offers to help.It means a lot to me. All my very best.-M :^)

I like the darkness of this macro ! It is very suitable to the monster you shooted ! >>> If there is anything wrong in those settings please tell me, because i gave up! <<< What does it mean ? Sure you already know what's wrong with this photo. Is it an exercice to test us ? Well well, as I don't think there is in artistic blur in this photo, of course the sharpness is not the best. The focus is on the eyes, that's perfect, but the depth of field is really too short. Shooting such a hugely close macro with a f/2.8 apperture is a baby-photographer mistake, and you are far from being a baby-photographer, that's shure. So what is you really purpose ? I would not advice to use a flash (the light will have nothing to do with the superb and original dark tones you've got here), and in adition, I'm not a fan of the flash, exept in studio. I prefer natural lightning that is alway better. I would advise to raise ISO to 1600, it produces reasonnable noise with the recent Canon cameras (and use a software noise remover if necessary, it works very well isn't it ?) so that you can still use 1/250 sec but with f/8, maybe even f/11 and recover the -1ev underexposure with Photoshop... Does it fit ?

This really proves that expensive camera is not all to make good pictures... I really do hope that Je's expertise will now finally be recognized on this site ! Besides, I'm like Ilona : it's dark and blurred, but I like it ! :~)

I can not advice you since I am a "baby photographer". did you have 4 filters? or am I misunderstanding. I have no problem with my 105 macro 2.8.I think it is an incredible macro

I like it just as it is - now the challenge would be to reproduce this effect with a cam you are familiar with - lol

I would go along with Jerome on this the mood is great but if you use bolt on filters you will lose a lot x 4 filters wont give you that much extra magnification and the DOF will just be a few mm at best better to go with less wide open apertures.. Or take the glass off the front of the Macro I use the MP_E 65mm that gives you real 1-5 x macro but is a pig to get right with camera movement esp on bugs which will move or wind that will blow!! This is great to see people giving an opinion Well done Joe we all need to practice dont we!!

I can't advise you concerning your settings ... :-) it's dark and a bit unsharp, but that gives it something mysterious. I still like it.

Well Joe, I'd love to have such a camera and try it myself. As for the results, even if I cannot advise, I love the metallic sheen you have unintentionally managed to achieve.
