Couldn't sleep last night? It must have been the moonlight. Last night's full Moon was the biggest and brightest of 2006. Why is that? The Moon's lopsided orbit. One side of the Moon's orbit is 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other side. The two sides are called, respectively, perigee, from Greek, meaning "close to Earth," and apogee, meaning "far from Earth." Last night's Moon was at perigee and about 12% larger than the moon at apogee. This post-sunset photo is a composite of two exposures, one for the environment and one for the moon itself. I then combined the two in Photoshop. If I had more than a 5X zoom on my camera, I would have gotten a bit closer. The red streak is the tail light of a passing car. A SPOT OF FOLKLORE: September's full Moon is usually called the Harvest Moon, but not this year. By definition, the Harvest Moon is the full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox. This year's equinox falls on Sept. 23rd and the full Moon closest to that comes on October 7th. The 2006 Harvest Moon will have to wait until October. I can't tell you how many times I woke up last night with the moon shining in on me... It really was bright!!!! I kept thinking it was time to get up. This is an amazing shot!! Wish I could get my C8080 to take such a good shot of the moon??? You'll have to tell me what settings you used ok??? Excellent work Kort!!!!!

I will diary 7th October for the next in this series then! Lovely shot & good to see two exposures worked together so well. Incidentally the astrophotographers claim that 1/250s @F11 is the best exposure for moon shots at ISO 100 - though I've never managed to get a decent shot yet with my 400mm, I shall try again 7/10/06. Thanks for the tip!!

Beautiful image! Thanks, also, for the 'info'! (Saw on the news last night the moon was 'only' 222,000 miles from earth. Usually about 240, 250,000 miles. Said 'tides' on the 'east' coast would be higher than normal, also).

It had to be moonglow.....yessirree, enough to awaken the werewolf in all of us. Red eyes, bloody fangs, tons of muscle, lots of hair and fur...you know the drill. Great marriage of the two exposures. I really like the water reflections. Incidentally, the moon, our nearest neighbor, is very slowly creeping away from the earth, at a rate of around 1.5 inches a year. Among other things, it will eventually spell doom for the ocean tides and love songs.

I have been remodeling this old house of mine,,windows replaceing--very large almost a glass house now --4 am ,can't sleep ,,light off ,only my screen glow until this same wonderful moon dropped closer to the trees and burst a bright glow though the room,startled me at first!! I didn't stand a chance at a shot-it was the harvest yellow moon ,,but 1 street lamp would have spoiled it as a photo ,,Glad you got it!! Excellent is a understatement for this shot!!

Too cloudy here. Fantastic image, the moon hanging over those houses is amazing. Sometimes at this time of year we get bright ornage moons. What's the explanation for that?
