Description

"The moon develops the imagination, as chemicals develop photographic images." ~ Sheila Ballantyne

Couldn't sleep last night? It must have been the moonlight. Last night's full Moon was the biggest and brightest of 2006. Why is that? The Moon's lopsided orbit. One side of the Moon's orbit is 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other side. The two sides are called, respectively, perigee, from Greek, meaning "close to Earth," and apogee, meaning "far from Earth." Last night's Moon was at perigee and about 12% larger than the moon at apogee. This post-sunset photo is a composite of two exposures, one for the environment and one for the moon itself. I then combined the two in Photoshop. If I had more than a 5X zoom on my camera, I would have gotten a bit closer. The red streak is the tail light of a passing car. A SPOT OF FOLKLORE: September's full Moon is usually called the Harvest Moon, but not this year. By definition, the Harvest Moon is the full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox. This year's equinox falls on Sept. 23rd and the full Moon closest to that comes on October 7th. The 2006 Harvest Moon will have to wait until October. Brilliant composite, Kort. And your commentary is as fascinating as ever! We had clear skies on the 7th/8th as well, so we could also enjoy this stunning moonlight. Terrific work!
