Description

Last night I found this wicked model by Russell Tawn, but it was in Lightwave format. Format conversions are either simple or problematic - there's no in between. This model was well worth all the flipped normals and numerous conversion attempts! In the end, from Deep Exploration, I exported out 3 main sections of the model as .obj files and imported them into max. There were lots of things to fix and I was up until 8:30am this morning. I was not brave enough to UV map this, but it still renders nice enough. The MAX model now consists of 871,033 polys and when it was all done I had to set the viewports to bounding box, so as not to slow my rendering and camera adjustment. these are just some quick renders, but I think if rendered with Brazil this would be pretty sweet! Russell Tawn's lightwave model can be found at http://scifi3d.theforce.net/download.asp?intGenreID=11&intCatID=28&filekey=1100&key=639

That is awesome. I could not get it to convert. I saw that model at sci-fi meshes I think. I am going to try and model the same vehicle from the movie. I was in downtown chicago when the streets were closed off and they were test driving the one in the movie.

A teadious job,but well worth your efforts! The original vehicle was constructed at Shepperton Studios in the UK.The polygon count would kill my computer I'm sure. :B eaver !

holy crap, that would have been a lot of work to convert. Pretty sweet model, and great render!

You have the patience of a saint and it was well worth the effort!

Heh, Heh, My patience is limited to this creative stuff, and lacking in the areas that prove most useful :) lol This model is really not useable for most people's computers.... just too big! I have a P4 3.2Ghz processor and 2GB of DDR fast Ram, and with only one very small reflection map it makes my computer run pretty slow. Thanks to everyone who looked and commented.

With regard to the conversion: Everytime I converted the model, or parts of the model I got ton's of flipped normals. In addition to that, there were newly generated polygons that had to be deleted. The tires look amazing, but they alone are 300,000 polys after optimization. Locating and selecting all the faces that were flipped, proved to be the most time consuming exercise - I'm sure there are some I missed due to the complexity of this model. The model loads without smoothing and with 25 or so Multi-SubObject materials that all have to be adjusted and fine tuned for the right look. If there had been custom texture maps for this model... it would have been impossible for me to use them. Originally I was hoping to use this in poser..... lol, no way :) Fortunately we're blessed with photoshop, so I can composite single renders together for any projects I might use this model for. well, enough rambling :)

Wow, great job on this one too.. yeah, I agree it was a real pain in the ass to do the conversions.. LDW and I were actually able to do the conversions, and then get it into poser.. But it is taxing on the resources.. lol...
