Description

This was an entry for a contest at another site I belong to. The contest requirement was a drawing of a ten year old girl, oversized clothing and dirty face, hands, feet and clothing with matted shoulder length hair. Large sad but hopeful eyes. With or without a cat/kitten. Okay,,,its been a really long time since I've done drawings of this magnitude. First, I can rarely (other than cartooning) draw a child to look like a child. And I've never drawn animals outside of the tricks my Dad showed me to do birds. More importantly, I've never posted my sketchings before. So the contest afforded me an opportunity to jump out of my nest once more. Post work outside of framing consisted of picking up the contrast and lowering the brightness. My scanner is an older one and "everything" comes out bright. For #2, the intent was penciling as a child would. I pulled out all of my children's artwork (they are teenagers and adults)and penciled as closely as I could to that age group. Then I used the tecnique of grisaille for texture only. Grisaille requires only one color, usually grey. I got this brainstorm to try it for texture. I only had the opportunity to use two layers as the contest time was limited. Shading is not my forte, so any advice in that area is welcomed. She has one leg bent while the other is crossed. Thank you again.

Looks like you accomplished your requirement superbly! Bravo! Sure wish I had my Pencil, chalk, and pen art from years ago. In a classic Artist's mood, I burned them all! Better than an ear I always say! ;) I alway say study the Masters!

My Dear Michelle ... you have given us a very creditable drawing ... I realise that considrable shading/colouring et. can be gained from many programmes, however being one of the old school I eould be inclined to do my shading first. With your pictures you have a window on the right. This is the source of light for your entire piece. Everythinf prominent on the right should be of a lighter shade and everything else darker. You could begin by trying a positive/negative approach and draw the picture again usung only black and white. subsequent pictures would see the lessening of the black and the increase of the white. An excellent shading tool is the tip of the little finger, (using a 2. 3, or 4b pencil) aided with a "Penguin Eraser". Grey in colour with the texture of well chewn gum.)These rasers can be rolled to form points allowing fine erasure close in to subject. Wish I could help you more ... :) EY Sammy

This is a very cute pic, and I think you have done a very good job on your part. I love it, and what a cute little face on both the little girl and the kitten. I would never judge, for I could never do something this nicely. Huggs...Silkylady...
