Description

I was out looking for insects a few weeks back when this horse-fly found me... She proceeded to administer a quick but rather painful bite to my right calf - upon which I whacked her... Usualy I prefer to photograph living things, but as you understand from the above story, this one is unfortunately dead. Still, its eyes were such a beautiful iridescent green that I had to take a picture of them. For those that are interested: She belongs to the family Tabanidae (as do all horse-flies) and the genera Hybomitra (they are as far as I know the only ones with hairy eyes...). The exact species is unknown.

Now there is something you don't see every day. A hairy eyed fly, lol. I am a fan of insects but if they bite, I also smack them. I posted a smacked horsefly image recently. His eyes were not hairy but they were wildly colored, lol. I only stunned mine but he was then given as a gift to a nearby garden spider.

Well, if you had to kill it then I think it was a good thing to have made it's demise not in vane and to have captured its rare beauty and detail in this photo. Good job.

"Jeepers creepers where'd you get those peepers", Another reminder that while looking for beauty elsewhere it usually passes unnoticed. Perhaps she wanted yor attention, LOL it seems she got it. She's now "rendered" immortalized. Thanks for sharing. BJ
