Description

The coral tanks at uShaka Marine World Aquarium, Durban. Tx for all the interest on these images. The aquarium is made out of an old oil tanker that was ship wrecked along the Angolaian coast in 2001. It was lifted by crane and shipped around the tip of Africa, through the Cape of Good Hope. It was then placed on South Beach, Durban. So the theme inside is of this ship wreck. Things hang upside down and chairs are even bolted to the roof - stairways are upside down and even the writing on walls. When you walk through to the coral tanks things become upright and the engine rooms change to passenger cabins of a cruise liner. If you don't line the fish that much you can go just for the decor!

I enjoy watching your progression as an artist. Someone published an article listing photogs as one of the little known highest paying jobs in the US. Not all photogs however. Its a specialty area so if youre interested in learning what it is, email me. To Maggiemai: Durban is a major city on South Africas East Coast, population 3 million, about the same as Miami, Phoenix or Seattle. It features a modern infustructure with skyscrapers, super-highways and a robust tourism industry. 30% of the citys population is made up of educated descendants of immigrants from India and Europe, like PeeWee. 70% are Black, primarily of the Zulu tribe of which Oprah Winfrey recently discovered she is a descendant. Its also a major port city and is the primary port of trade between Southern Africa and other parts of the world chiefly Asia and Europe. There's a healthy retail industry too, the largest shopping mall in the southern hemisphere is in Durban, larger that any mall I've seen in the US. For the people living there, crime is a big problem, as it is in South Africa in general. People who can afford it live behind barbed wire fencing. The police warn motorists if they get a flat tire in certain areas, keep driving with a flat tire. Female paramedics were encouraged by police a couple of years ago to carry condoms with them when responding to emergency calls because of the risk of being raped in the course of their duty. The HIV infection rate in Kwa-Zulu Natal, the South African province where Durban is located is the highest on earth. The average income is only about $3,500 US a year if my math is right but most things cost that same as they do in the US. I havent figured out how they live on that yet! Cars and gas are actually more expensive. Housing however is way cheaper and on top of the lower housing costs, most people live with the parents well into adulthood. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durban http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CentralDurban.jpg
