Born in Hilo, Hawaii and class of '66, I became very active in Barbells, Judo and love striking the heavy/speed bag. I've learned to Rollerblade and bike ride which is a very health sport. But time doesn't stop for anyone including for me. So my good friend Dave aka punaguy got me started in taking pictures. I'm having fun taking pictures especially hiking the mountains. I'm enjoying seeing the world thru your post on Renderosity. Mahalo and Aloha....Errol

So when hot lava pours over old lava like that...doesnt that melt the old lava? Sigh...im so ignorant. #:o( And why aint it ozing from the heat? I sure gotta see this "phenomena" myself if i ever go to Hawaii. Ooooh!!!! I cant see a face...naturally because youre the only one that does that, lol...but i do see your shadow. YAAAAAAAY!!! Have a wonderful weekend Errol! #:o)

Andreas. In our observation, we have never seen fresh lava melt the old lava during our lava hikes. Pahoehoe(ooze) and a'a differ in various properties, such as crystal and gas bubble content, as well as having slight differences in temperature. You can tell the difference between the two..Pahoehoe being more smooth while a'a is rough and jagged. You can find information at the site below. Thanks for asking and hope you come over to Hawaii to see it live. Aloha http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/volcanowatch/1999/99_05_27.html

I agree with babuci... that fact that your shadow is in the shot gives you some sense of depth and more realism on the size of the lava stream. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend! :)
