When i was but 4 years of age. I had a few close friends. Johny was one of my best and we had some wonderful adventures chasing cats dogs frogs playing on old logs. Catching snakes just being kids. Never could catch a cat or dog if they did not want to be caught.... well the last summer in the town on the shore of lake erie was hot and swimming in the then not yet declared polluted lake was a hilight of the day. Well fall came i started kindergarten. And a few weeks latter My father said we were moving. Life took one of its many extreme upheavals. Spent my last day pitching stones and skipping rocks with Johny. Last time i would ever see him. A few years latter my mother got a letter from her friends in that town. That my friend had been hit by a car and died. At 6 losing a close friend was shocking new and traumatic. Was left bewildered. But kids adapt but was now aware of death and its meaning. Many more to follow but not here another story. A few years latter we went back to that town to visit other friends. And a girl Nancy who still lives!! But i told my parents i would go see Johny,s family and pay my respects. On approach the house i saw it had not changed much.From my older eyes today it looked quite run down. But to the eyes of a kid just lived in and well used. Johny,s father and mother And one just slightly older brother we in the yard .I walk up to the father and mother and said some well rehearsed adult type speech of condolences etc. His father asked the brother if he would walk with me to where Johnny was berried. I saw the tears in there eyes as i had them too. On the way i picked some flowers here and there saw people bring them to funerals on tv. We got to the grave yard. Some one had gone around pushing over head stones. Johny,s was one i was shocked at such a loathsome act. We tried picking it up and could not. A teen was walking past saw us struggling came and helped.We three managed to set it upright.Not quite striate but close. Well John,s brother left as he had done his part i stayed for a while and talked to my friend told him of all the changes and things i had done. Pondered for a long while felt the quiet of the place then left my humble pile of flowers and left. Have never ever been back to that town or grave. Do to i,ll health and poverty i guess i never will. Some friends stay with you even when their gone. Oh to return to such simple easy days as we had to terrorize a few cats and barking dogs. to skip a few more stones. But alass Those days only live in my far off memories . Well Johnny so so much has happened Would take too too long to be telling you here. I will be seeing you soon. Watch for a wrinkled old man that walks funning like old Frank the water works guy did.
