Description

This is the first in a series of outback photos I have been gathering in my travells. Hope you enjoy the pics as much as I enjoyed (and still enjoy) the trips! This wonderful little engine is in a little park on the corner beside the local store in my dad's home town of Grong Grong, situated along the 50Klm from Narrandera along the Newell Hyw, about 4-5 hours west of Sydney & Canberra or 3 hours North of the mighty Murry River. The green grass you see there is usually the only patch of colour for 100's of miles in drought season. This is the very start of where the land flattens out into the Western Plains....next bumb is basically W.A My dad went to 3 schools there, 2 burnt down through bush fires. When he had a school reunion I stood in for him on the 'Pamandie' float and learnt a lot about the 'excuses' he used to skip class. The favourite being that his pony had a flat tire!!! It's claim to fame is being the 'home of the kelpie' which is the black & white or Brown and white sheep dogs that are greatly prized by wool farmers to round up sheep. I have spent many holidays with my aunt and uncle along the Pamandie Road there opposite my dad's home farm. I hope I didn't bore you all too much but I thought it would be nice to share this little patch of heaven from my childhood. Unfortunately we only go back there now for funerals and to pay our respects to dad. Hope you all enjoyed this little trip into outback Australia, by the time you dust off your boots and grab a tinny I hope to have some more to share (probably without as much blathering on I hope). Comments are always welcome, as the Aussies say..Grab a beer, put ya money on the fridge mate, wots the score? Jenny

I love the stories when trying to connect to the past, just a pity by protecting the steamer, they also hide it.

Sorry! I didn't realise that the info plate I used as a thumbnail was a bit fuzzy, :o( Jenny. This is the inscription: WAUGH & JOSEPHSON STEAM BOILER & FIREBOX This unit was used at the public dam on 'Windamere' Grong Grong. Supplying steam for an engine to pump water to an overhead tank for use by the local townsfolk and travelling stock. It operated from around the turn of the century, until a reservoir was constructed in the Grong Grong Village around 1940. Kindly donated by Ken & Nancy Limbrick.
