Description

The central theme of "Star Trek" (TM) that has always attracted me to the shows is exploring the unknown; going where no one has gone before. Here, the U.S.S. Farragut (a Nebula-class ship, a long-time favorite of mine) begins the careful survey of a newly discovered solar system with a pass of the largest planet, a super-Jovan with a vast ring system. The nightside glows, not just with reflected ringlight, but by the warmth of the planet's own internally generated heat. The scene was set up and rendered in Lightwave 8.5. The impressive Farragut model and textures were provided by an uncredited artist at the Lightwave Group v3 website. The ringed planet is based on a Lightwave freebie Nick Stevens offers on his always interesting http://www.starbase1.co.uk website. The color maps for thr giant are partially based on Jupiter maps by NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute. Thanks for taking a look!

Stra Trek art is usually a dime a dozen, but for my tastes this one's stand out. It feels like good astronomical art that just happens to have some s Star Trek themes interwoven. The mood of the piece is both dramatic and at the same time quiet. The cool tones of the ship and crisp detail can't help but evoke the frigid silence of interplanetary space. The piece does a great job in capturing that core spririt of Trek - no, not space operatic twists of Kirk's long-forgotten love child. "Exploration" - you know, space: the final frontier. A simple yet elegant piece, Tom.
