Description

When I was very young I was terrified of dragonflies. I don't know why. One day my dad and I were out fishing and he let me row the boat.... I was about 8 years old. We were rowing through some lily pads and I thought everything looked so beautiful... frogs croaking all around us when otherwise it was so very silent. All of a sudden a huge dragonfly landed on the oar... right next to my hand. I panicked and tried to scramble out of the way... and ended up falling out of the boat on the opposite side. My legs became tangled up in the lily pad vines and and there were water spiders the size of silver dollars all around my face. The terror I felt was debilitating. I screamed for my dad to help me. He very calmly said, "Doll", (he always called me Doll... still does) "put your feet on the bottom of the river and walk to shore." In my wild and unfounded fear I hadn't realized that I was in very shallow water. I stood up and ran through the water... flailing at unknown demons all the while. When I got to the safety of the shore (all of about 15 feet away) that same dragonfly was sitting on a rock... and now, out of the "danger zone"... I couldn't help but notice how incredibly fragile and beautiful he was. Delicate black wings... criss-crossed with gossamer translucent patterns... his body an incredible neon green... and I realized that there was nothing to fear... that I was so much bigger than he... and yet he wasn't afraid of me. Ever since that day I have loved dragonflies. If I'm sitting out by the pool and one lands on me... I feel so fortunate to be able to gaze upon it and marvel at the wonder of flight they seem to possess... :) I get long-winded sometimes... thanks for putting up with me... And thank you ALL so very much for your gracious response to "Eschering in The Fall"... you made my autumn... ;) Thanks, too, for having a look at this one... full-sized is the ticket... if you have the time... Thank you!! Hugs! Helen :)

Very elegant look, gorgeous colors and shapes. And I love your story, I think your dad must have been a very smart man, and his daughter very lucky to be able to turn a scary experience into something so precious. Cheers!

When I was little and Dad and my older brothers would allow me to go along with them Fishing, when we saw Dragon flies they called them Snake Doctors. To this day I have no Idea Why, anyway. This is as always a Beautifully Crafted piece with Brilliant Contrasts and Details, Terrific. & Peace

Beautiful work! My memories of youth are very limited, I don't know why. I remember eating banana flavored popsicles when I was about 8. We were spending the summer in New London, my father working at the naval base there. My little brother fell off the dock into the water and had to be rescued and I stepped on a yellow jacket nest in the ground and got stung all over. We used to go for cookouts in the summer, leaving the asphalt and concrete of NYC for the grass that was found about 30 miles away to the northeast. Your colors are wonderful and your lighting is perfect, dark and bright at the same time, the work of a master.

A wonderfully incredible story and so eleganatly put in this beautiful and delicate image! My daughters dragonfly story was a little different. She still remembers the cutie, but did not understand why it died. We have an image of it for memories and she still laughs about the little time she had with it. So believe me it is nice to know that there are stories out there like this. Thank you ever so much for sharing the story and the beautiful image!

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. They look like fireflies to me. I do, however, remember well the dragonflies at the lake we spent summers at in NH. I hated them too. They were such an annoyance. My mother used to say to us.....but they are a good insect....they eat something I dont remember.....she was always looking for the good in everything. lol.

What a beautiful story! About 3 days ago I was sitting outside in the waning hours of the afternoon, and I saw so many birds coming I thought that maybe they were migrating. I watched as they filled the yard and began swooping and dipping, hundreds of them! What I had not noticed was that the yard was also filled with hundreds and hundreds of dragonflies who were beautifully out-maneuvering them with ease. Such a sight! I had never seen such a thing. The dragonflies stayed three feet or less off the ground. The birds weren't very succesful. This is outstanding, as usual...You always blow me away.
