Description

Watching: by Clare       C109.jpegElgon had seemed to appreciate the goblet that Daphne had found and surprised us both by not summarily kicking us out of Clio's shop. After he and his men had gone over everything, Elgon went to the door and called to Clio to come in for questioning. Daphne started to run toward her, but I put a paw out to stop her. Not now, Daphne. Elgon seems to have forgotten that we're here. We need to hear this conversation. Stay back here with me! And be quiet! My friend was trembling in her anxiety for her human but seeing the reason in my request, managed to hold her self back. We listened as Clio described her actions when she had arrived home the previous night and the finding of the body this morning. When the scribe spoke, I had to put out my paw again to restrain Daphne from leaping on him in her outrage as his encouraging Elgon to arrest Clio. We followed them back into the shop and stared intently at the face on the dead woman when Elgon turned her over. I hissed at Daphne. Do you know her? No, Clare, I'm sure I've never seen her before. The scribe, whose name was Anias, was still arrogantly encouraging Elgon to arrest our friend, something which appeared to anger the Magistrate, so Daphne and I were both stunned when Elgon went to the door and after looking about for a moment or two, called four of his men to place Clio under arrest on suspicion of murder. Daphne ran toward them, ready to scratch the eyes out of anyone who dared to lay a hand on her human and it took all my powers of reason to convince her that she could be of more help to Clio if she were not in jail with her, or worse, if I correctly judged the twitching thigh muscles of the arresting officers as they contemplated the cat who was crying loudly at them. Suddenly we heard screams from outside and ran to see what was happening. It was Niobe, her arms pinioned by one of Elgon's most unsavory looking goons. Zoe and Amitressa added their voices to the din and appeared to be about to rescue Niobe themselves when Elgon strode up and angrily ordered his man to leave the ladies alone and to shut his foul mouth, shaking his head in disgust as he gave the man a shove in the direction of the road. Suddenly, I realized that Daphne was no longer by my side and knew that she had followed the men who were taking Clio away. Not wanting her to be doing anything stupid, I dashed off in pursuit.
