Following My Human: by Daphne
While it was fun to investigate with Clare, this whole murder was hitting to close to home. How could people think that Clio did such a horrible deed? Don't they think that I would have known if she did it? Although I have to admit, I was tired and apparently slept through the events that happened downstairs.
Now they were taking Clio off somewhere.
It was easy for a cat to slip through the streets and lanes of Athens wending her way through legs and over obstacles.
However, I didn't manage to make my way inside the magistrate's headquarters, before the door closed. I was going to have to find another way in.
Slinking my way around the building, I looked for any small gaps or cracks that a cat might make use of, but Elgon's watchful eye had apparently encouraged his men to keep the building in good shape.
Sitting back on my bottom, I washed a paw as I considered what to do next. Then my hearing caught a strange noise. It was Clio! She was crying! I needed to get to her quickly.
Where was the sound coming from? Ah ha! That window. If I leapt up on that box, then climbed the trellis to the ledge, walk across the ledge till I was under the window and then leapt to the window. Yes, that would do it.
Within the time it would take a dog to roll in the dirt, I was in the window--wiggling through the bars. I had gained weight on that trip to Egypt. Normally, I should have slipped right through, but I made it.
Quietly I landed on a rickety table, which barely held me. Clio's chair was next to the table. She was hunched over, head in hands, obviously distressed. I did my cute cat thing and butted my head against hers and tried to get on her lap to be as close as possible.
It worked!
I purred as loud as I could trying to reassure my human that we cats would do what we could--even if it meant scratching a few human backs.
As I was comforting her, I heard the sound of approaching footsteps. Someone was coming. I needed to hide so that they wouldn't know I was here. I made my way down to the floor, and pretending that I just wanted to wind my way around Clio's ankles, hid myself under her chiton.
I was just in time. Someone entered the room.
