Description

I started to make a model loosely based an advertising photo of the hotel "Harbour Plaza Hong Kong" in Hung Hom, Kowloon. The photo was only 2x3 inches, and reasonably well printed, so I was able to make out the cast- or wrought-iron balustrades. I had just bought the font "P22 Zaner" which has fantistic characters. I used only the period character. I began to think this was an approachable Bryce task, but quickly ran into problems - helical! In the end I came up with two solutions, and both are included here. First, was to make a cylinder and map it with a transparency mask. The balustrades in the image were made this way. Second solution, was to make a 3ds mesh of with Carrara, bend it. The chandelier, circular rails and straight rails were made with the 3ds model, straight and bent versions. I did not get as far as shear, but the helical balustrade "castings" would only be made with bending and shearing. [Ed. Note: sorry about the second post but forgot to mention I'm rendering a newer version with trees and art on the walls - post that tomorrow. Please check back!]

I love that you included your problem solving routine! Always good to see others process. Like the trouble I was having on my "Hurricane of crows". I see the results of your solution clearly!! You have a wonderful way with lighting!!! This is a delightful architectural piece!! Right on!!

This is a perfect example of what I like about your work. It is interesting and the colors and lighting add the main spark to make the image 'pop'! Awesome job yet again!!

Ok, I'm seeing them backwards... still have to get the feel of the new website, I think. I like this one better because it shows more the architectural details and the construction. Also, as always, your explanations on how you did it are useful and inspirational. Gee... :)
