Description
mixed medium here. the background is Terragen (just a quickie, since it isn't the main focus here). a very basic version of the machine was modeled in Max (basic shapes, geometry, rough lighting, basic shadows) to get lines and perspective right. all the little details, scratches, dirt, rust, little highlites, grass, etc... was painted post-render in Photoshop, which is also where it was composited with the background.

This is friggin' awesome! The model concept is interesting in itself but the composite/postwork treatment are really outstanding! I LOVE it!

Thanks! :) Here's the hires 3072x1800 version. not 56k friendly (3-megs) http://www.nearworlds.org/stuff/stranded_hires.jpg.jpg And here's a little composite of some of the layers and overlays used http://www.nearworlds.org/stuff/stranded_layers.jpg First one is the bare 3D model. basic geometry. second one is my shading overlay for highlites and shadows. this was a lot of fun to bring out reflections and stuff! especially happy how well the whole leg turned out after this pass! third is the rust, which was a lot easier than it looks to do. I just used a lot of masks and "select color range" with a low "noisy" tolerance. copy and paste the selected, sharpen, colorise (rust color), add a bit of noise and finally inner dropshadow. I'd then go at it with a noisy eraser brush to make it less follow the underlying color. fourth is the scratch overlay. that's the basics of it.
