Description


An image of C8H10N4O2, also known as methyltheobromine if you wish to try and impress people. (Note I said "try.") Yes, it's caffeine, everyone's favorite central nervous system stimulant! It works by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain and the resultant decrease in adenosine activity leads to an increase in dopamine and epinephrine (adrenaline) and, in large doses serotonin. So you wake up and feel better. Until, after awhile, the number of troublesome adenosine receptors goes up and you need a bigger and bigger fix, at which point stopping results in nasty headaches. All sorts of other exciting caffeine facts can be found on Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caffeine ) - although I didn't need to check Wikipedia for that bit about withdrawl headaches. This particular image was made with Bryce 5 and is based on a written chemical diagram and so is flatter than the real molecule is in 3d. I have used blue for carbon, red for hydrogen, yellow for that pesky nitrogen, and green for oxygen.

My favorite stimulant. Do you model molecules from gluing spheres, instead of importing PDB files ? If so you'll probably love the tools I'm using :)

Thanks for the nice comments! Ayami: As you surmise, I put these together just by connecting Bryce spheres manually. I went through a phase a year or so ago when I was making all sorts of reflections and reflections of reflections. Now that I think about it this is the sort of thing which, theoretically, would look neat with HDRI - assuming I waited ten days for the whole thing to render.
