Description

Intro for some info: If there was a word bigger in meaning then proud I would have filled the page with that word. But instead my tribute to my Squire is about what we enjoy doing best and that is hunting dragons. The reason I am beyond proud is that my Squire (who is pictured in the thumbnail to this post) won 2nd place in a major local Karate tournament this past weekend and accelerated 6 belt levels in only a year and a half. Although I don't know if that is an average for a child at the age of now 10, but this child has a condition called cardio-myopathy. So with a seasonal touch to this story/poem I give tribute to my Squire the Dragon Hunter. DRAGONS AND THEIR BUBBLE GUM The wind was cold and breezy And it’s howl was kind of creepy My Squire and I were bundled up tight In blankets in front of the TV Filled with sweet treasures we hoarded Between us a pumpkin head The likes and dislikes now sorted Though it was late we weren't ready for bed As the leaves rustled outside Along the sidewalks down the street Crackling and scratching their way Bringing goose bumps to our head and feet We nibbled a bit here and nibbled a bit there Just staring at the TV Our legs felt like rubber bones After our treasure hunting journey Then suddenly in my attic's den We heard a strange yet spooky sound I said "Dear Squire, do you hear that?" "Dragons must be around!" "I'm not afraid of dragons anymore" My proud squire did boast "I could take one on with my bare hands" "And have them make me toast" So I jumped up suddenly Exclaiming, "OK, then come with me" "Let's find out what sounds so strangely!" "And this time I shall follow thee!" Up the dark stairs to the attic's den I followed my squire tip-toeing in Puffing up dust from black soot Spread out under each foot Seeing a witch's hat from Old hag Nan And a red pitch-fork from Farmer Dan Fell onto a bag of old treats The kind Dragons like to eat Then before I could reach the main switch The sound gave me a frightening twitch But my squire now nimble and brisk Grabbed the pitch-fork with a leap and twist And stabbed at the plastic bag Knocking over the hat of Nan the hag Pushing any and every thing aside Exposing a place a dragon would hide Flicking the switch to see just where Most of the wrappings still were there But half of the bag was gone From what the Dragons were chewing on Yet what I thought might be a dragon Even the king of kings of them all Just happen to be the wind howling through A small crack in the attic wall And I looked dumbfounded at my Squire And my Squire stared back at me And both of us in unison Began to laugh uncontrolably Then suddenly I stood silent My mind suddenly felt the worst I said "Dear Squire:" "What if fire breathing Dragons could blow" "The biggest bubble you'll ever know" "And at will could make them burst!"

Even without the touching intro this was more than passing good verse. The intro simply gives it a little more sparkle. It has a wonderfully jaunty rhythm and keeps the attention from start to finish. Excellent narrative poetry. Well done! Mike
