Here is a moth that my son Connor caught as a caterpiller, that soon went into chrysalis, and then a week or two later hatched into this amazing moth. This is it soon after that 'hatching.' Enjoy Andreas! ;'] ----- Species Pachylia ficus - Fig Sphinx - Hodges#7841 Size 4 3/4 - 5 1/2 inches (12 - 14 cm) wingspan. Identification Forewing upperside is orangish brown with a paler patch along the costa at the tip. Hindwing upperside is orange to orangish brown with a black outer border, a black median band, and a white spot on the outer margin near the body. Caterpillars vary widely in coloration. If diagonal stripes are present they are unusual for sphinx moths in that they slope away from the tail end, not up towards it. Caterpillars may undergo a dramatic color change (green with orange back) prior to pupation. Range This great hawkmoth, which is common in Central and South America, occurs sparingly in Florida and Texas. Specifically, Uruguay north through Central America, Mexico, and the West Indies to Florida, South Texas, and southern Arizona. Strays north to Indiana and Pennsylvania. Season "Several flights throughout the year in the tropics, peninsular Florida, and South Texas." Food Caterpillar hosts: Various species of fig (Ficus). Adult food: Flower nectar.
