After a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn
that love doesn't mean leaning
and company doesn't always mean security
and you begin to learn
that kisses aren't contracts
and presents aren't promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of woman, not the grief of a child
and you learn
to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow's ground is
too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way of falling down
in mid-flight
after a while you learn
that even sunshine burns
if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone
to bring you flowers
and you learn that you really can endure
you really are strong
you really do have worth
and you learn
and you learn
with every goodbye, you learn...

It is said that "revenge is a dish better taken cold" - though I suspect that it's better not taken at all since it diminishes both perpetrator and victim. I suppose the motive behind the hurt is crucial here: if both have hurt through carelessness or thoughtlessness [i.e. by accident so to speak] then with much discussion and care the situation can be rescued and even strengthened. If the hurts are deliberate on both sides, the realtionship is dead anyway. The worst scenario [imho] is when someone deliberately hurts their in response to an accidental hurt. That's simply unjustified. A very well written piece, made me think! Thank you. Mike

Wow, you just sank into my heart for a moment. If only everyone could know such truth.

It reminds me of what one would think is good for him, the other party would think what is good for him and then there is the part which is good for both. Very well said.
