Description
Hello everyone!
I love so much 3D cartoons, I'd watch them everywhere. Hence the title.
My training with XSI continues... modeling (the DVDs are my first serious attempt at reproducing with polygons something looking somewhat "real"), texturing (UV mapping), ligthing, rendering and so on... to infinity and beyond! :)
I'm slowly trying to cover every single one of the zillion features this fantastic app has, focusing each time on a topic I still don't know or grasp. That's why I set the comment preferences here to "critical preferred": don't be shy and, if you're in the mood, thanksalots a-plenty in advance and please do tear this image apart. I still have so much to learn, and you guys are looming out there, I know ;)
Enough ranting for now and let's go back to business: the image above is very simple, as you can see. DVDs and shelf are modeled with polygons, the vase is a simple revolved NURBS, DVD covers are UVmapped from scanned pictures. The scene is lit by a single spotlight for the sun (with a orange-ish cookie applied to simulate shadows from a tree) and two blue-ish "bouncing panels" to the sides. Rendered in a single pass with global illumination and final gathering, it took near three hours to come out (2h30' of which to calculate the photon map). No postwork or compositing at all.
Done. :) Thanks a lot for passing by, May Your Renders Be Short and have a wonderful week y'all.
Stefano

well, it's hard for me to comment critically for the first time in years on your works, so let me just start by saying that the lighting is spot-on. my only beef would be with the textures, especially that of the wall. either it has no bump mapping or it's stretched too thin, i can't really decide. all the same, solid work, you can see the difference between pro's and amateurs when it comes to learning new apps :)

I smile evry time I see one fo your posts you have a great talent!

Agree with Drac on the wall. Also the shelf seems to be such shiny new wood, while the shelfsupports are old and rusty and the vase-tex is stretching a little. A great composition though with very good lighting (love that tree shadow) and modelling/mapping of those DVDs (my favourites as well!).

Also the DVDs look very weird against the shelf, as though they aren't casting shadows. I can't tell how the Madagascar is leaning on Shrek, because it isn't affecting the shelf beneath it. I like the lighting though, as always.

terrific work stef... you might have fun and get some templates from the excellent site "www.jewelboxing.com" by Coudal partners... as if you need more to think about! ;-)

The lighting is fantastic - great color and shadow! Yeah, the wall behind looks a bit flat - don't mind the boards though - vcould just be smooth-sanded and glossed wood for all we know. The DVDs look a little "flat" and what would solve this might be some crisp glossiness - nothing huge, but enough to have slightly larger than pinpoint shiny highlights. I think that wouls sell it a little more convincingly. I'm SO jealous - haven't had the time to dig deep into XSI yet. This is wonderful!! Can't wait to see more! -Lew ;-)

Wow Stefano, this is a fantastic composition ! I am not very well placed to criticize your work, I am nullity in modeling :) I really like very much the lighting and the set of shades... superbly done !!

Hi Stefano,beautiful scene and idea,lighting...excellent!!!:o)

The tree shadows are such a clever idea! Your lighting concepts are always superbly done and fascinating. There must be different light in Italy :)

Lighting, UVmaps, all look great. Only thing that caught my eye is the scale of the brick backdrop. The bricks look a bit short height wise and a bit small overall. (The drawbacks of being a contractor)....Still, Kudos my friend.

I have no critisism to make 'cos you've only gone and shown some of my most favourite films of recent times. Great image and I think your lighting skills are very good. 8)
