Description
I feel like an idiot: I have been in Florida for over thirty years and I only noticed that flower in 2002. I am no horticulturist or botanist (is horticulture concerned with wild flowers? - I don't even know that!) but I think I should have seen it before. I went to the library yesterday just so I could call it by its proper name. I had only moderate success: it seems it is of the Evening Primrose family (Onagraceae) and its first name is Ludwigia but after that it is either alternifolia (Seedbox), octovalvis (Mexican Primrose) or hirtella (Spindle Root) depending on how many valves there are in the seed capsule: 4 for the Seedbox and 8 for the Mexican P. and since I haven't had the time to stick around...
Anyway I like the way the sepals show between the base of the petals. This is rather unusual. To me it has its little charm and I feel like a proud father :)
