Description

"Nothing is really so poor and melancholy as art that is interested in itself and not in its subject." ~ George Santayana "All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another." ~ Anatole France "All my joys to this are folly, Naught so sweet as Melancholy." ~ Robert Burton "Melancholy is the pleasure of being sad." ~ Victor Hugo

Melancholy is an odd word that describes quite a complex emotion. It is wistfulness that has matured into something deeper. It is sadness with a touch of glamor. Some even aspire to it, revel in it. Personally, I'll take happiness and contentment any day. :') mel-an-chol-y [mel-uhn-kol-ee]

Complex indeed. But you sure captured it....its all in those sad eyes. Excellent! The muted tones are perfect for it. Oh and i love your avatar...although my cow-friends has a different message. 03ae970b72f48422a37ea48b2c8aa1c7.png

Lovely profile and magnificent capture, but after reading the text I'm now deeply depressed. BYW, ever heard the song, "My Melancholy Baby?"

What a depressive image, Kort... So I guess you did it right ;o)) or should I say ;o(( About your first quote from Santayana: I couldn't agree less...

You certainly captured the sad look but background is messy and ruins the effect a bit esp the white space

"How weary, stale, flat and unprofitable/Seem to me all the uses of this world!" * Hamlet, Act I, Scene II* by William Shakespeare A beautiful portrait, Kort, despite its theme, (unfashionable in today's Zoloft world!). You are right about the complexity of melancholy; the word which itself seems far more appropriate than the simplistic, clinical term, depression. Kudos, for the subject and commentary. Well done!
