Description

Mercury passed directly between the Earth and the Sun today, an event known as a "transit". This can happen a couple of times every 13 years or so with mercury, and a couple of times every 243 years for Venus. This shot was taken through a 3" refractor with a Nikon D100 (ISO200, 1/250 sec) using a special filter for viewing the sun. Mercury is the tiny dot in the lower left quadrant of the sun. The blotch on the left is sunspot NOAA-826. A couple of smaller sunspots are visible on the right side of the image.

Good one Jared. I had my scope and cameras ready, but as luck would have it, it rained here all damned day. I missed it. Will have to make sure I am still around in 2016 for the next one. Why the hell do I pay all those taxes and it still rains all day?

I heard about this on the news. It shows how huge our star is, and how small Mercury is in comparison to the sun, and even more stunning - the sun spot!

Great shot, I am always amazed at how huge the sun is, here a sunspot dwarfs Mercury itself!

When you think that "super blue giant" can be 2000 bigger than our sun. Univers is so fantastic to know, I'm sad for people who just look at the ground. Thanks for sharing!
