Thank you all for your comments and encouragement. Getting the FX lit up properly was a challenge, but I am fairly happy with the final effect. I had to play with the lighting a lot to achieve the effects I was after. The background alone took a fair amount of time... I actually created it for another render which I ended up not liking. I liked the background enough to give it a new life though :)
