Description

Moonrise Over L-Z Ra, Frontier World Five

“This is the view of El-zehtra from atop the summit of Mount Fulton (781 meters above sea level) on Frontier World Five. El-zehtra itself was merely the sandy basin of a dry lakebed, yet it gained historical significance as the site of the ill-fated Imperial Marine landing of 237. Sent in to suppress pirate activity in the system, the Emperor's 3rd Huscarles set down right in the middle of a trap.
Ambushed by mercenary contingents in the surrounding mountains, the marines were massacred,to a trooper. It is said that the entire slaughter took no more than 20 minutes' time. Eschewing the loss of any additional marine ground troops, the Imperial Naval Commander chose instead to target this zone from orbit, bringing his cruiser's particle accelerator weapon to bear upon it.
From up here, one can still see the devastating results, more than a hundred years afterward.”

Wow! That is incredible. Cold, harsh, and stark terrain and atmosphere. Very intense, and your story is excellent Carl. I wonder if one can hear a sound, perhaps a wind. The horizon is so low, so I assume there isn't much of an atmosphere there. Wow!

The atmosphere is so thin on Frontier World Five, there is never much wind. In any case, you would want to keep your vac suit on, as radiation levels here are in the moderate to high range.

A cold and lonely looking world, FWF is. With your story though, I kinda wanted to see a more weapon blasted terrain. Still starkly beautiful though.

Not sure how I missed this one. The nice rich colours gives it great impact. Good story tie in, one can imagine the flurry of enquiries and moral outrage about the Commanders actions with little mention of what precipitated his/her decision.

As it turns out, the Commander was promoted to full Captain's rank following this action. Others fared less well. The Marine Lieutenant Colonel in command at the time of the landing was 'encouraged' to take early retirement. The intelligence officer in charge was summarily executed.
