Description
The name of this restored WW2 aircraft gives a clue to the location...Harlingen,Texas,USA. A pair of Boeing B17 daytime heavy bombers.
Every year the Commemorative air force has a gathering and in 1981 I was able to attend.
The Flying Fortress was named because it had a large number of self defence gun positions. By keeping in large formations it was hoped that the combined firepower would make it very difficult to shoot down. Over Europe the tenacity of the Luftwaffe and accurate flak meant that losses were still high until the increasing range of escort fighters improved the chances of survival. For a feeling of a mission see the documentary Memphis Belle and to appreciate the youth of the crews watch the drama film of the same name.
In the UK we are still lucky to have an example airworthy..Sally B .

I can't believe you went to Harlingen, Texas and didn't get any pictures of the Iwo Jima War Memorial. It's a stone's throw from the air field.
