Description

Nikon 7900 image. Another summer shot that never got posted. The Golden Rod that bloomed on my place was an amazing area to find bugs of all sorts. The Daddy Long Legs is not a spider nor is it poisonous in spite of the common belief that they are. It is a member of the Order Opiliones, Family Phalangiidae.

Love all your insect/non-spider photos- Thanks for the info- The locals here believe that Daddy Long Legs are very poisonous, but their vicious fangs are not long enough to hurt humans! I think they're rather gentle creatures, staying in the same position for days, Beautiful shot!

I was once told that these spiders are a type of mite. A friend of mine used to explore small caves in the "badlands" in Texas and said he'd run into huge colonies of these things covering the walls and ceilings. Don't know if he knew what he was talking about but it had something to do with the absence of a separate abdomen rather than the one-piece body. Wonderful photo and nicely detailed and well presented.

These are always maligned as vicious killers. The whole enough poison to kill a city, but tiny mouth thing has followed it everywhere. I'v seen them in many countries. In Germany I saw people carrying many varieties of spider outside and placing them in trees, but these were killed on sight. I often wondered but the language barrier was always too great. Thanks BJ
