"I don't know what good composition is.... Sometimes for me composition has to do with a certain brightness or a certain coming to restness and other times it has to do with funny mistakes. There's a kind of rightness and wrongness and sometimes I like rightness and sometimes I like wrongness." "A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know." "The Chinese have a theory that you pass through boredom into fascination and I think it's true. I would never choose a subject for what it means to me or what I think about it. You've just got to choose a subject - and what you feel about it, what it means, begins to unfold if you just plain choose a subject and do it enough." ~ quotes by Diane Arbus
During the ferry ride to Cumberland Island, we passed many an island in the salt marshes. Some appeared uninhabited, others had nice new homes on them, and still others -- like this one -- had older structures on them. It is hard to tell if there was anyone living here, though in my experience, a decrepit dock does not mean that no-one lives in the house. Rather, it means that the inhabitants don't like company. I admit to finding a certain romantic charm in living miles away from civilization and having to boat into town to pick up supplies. If interested, you can see my St. Marys photos HERE and my other Cumberland Island photos HERE -----

No company, eh? Yup, that would send the message pretty well, I 'd say! Thanks for the info. :0)

Wonderful but at the same time also dangerous looking dock! LOL Excellent sea side capture!!!

I love that quote of yours regarding composition. Thats my kind of guy! I personally think those so called rules of composition are stupid and pointless unless used as a guideline or something. It shouldnt matter if you apply any of those rules or not as long as youre pleased with the result. There is no wrong or right as far as im concerned...and that goes for many things concerning photography. Its all a matter of personal taste anyway. Ive seen photos that are suppose to be textbook examples of how a photo should be composed, or exposed, that i personally find awful to look at. Anyhoo...that was a long ramble from moi. I shall now focus on your photos instead. Wow...they are two different ones, lol. At first i thought you had just flipped it and presented them as such to go with that quote of yours. But now i see they arent even the same dock...even though they are in just as bad a shape. NOOOO!!! Wait...scratch that!!!! Now i get it...IT IS the same dock after all, LOL. You just photographed it from both sides. I thought that tree looked familiar as well. I got it right eventually didnt i? Ooops....and my ramble goes on and on. Feel free to send this to a publisher if ya like....and you DON`T have to give me credit or anything....infact i rather you didnt mention me at all, lol. I shall now get back to work....cant belive i actually got paid to write this bla bla. #:oP....edited due to many typos and left out words....siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.

Seems quite "peligroso" that... anyway, a splendid pic and like those quotes.

A B-52's sugar shack ? certainly not Hobbits, all that water makes 'em nervous ! kool captures and quote Kort, looks like the tide comes in a fair way as well, no pitchin' tent on the front lawn ! hehehe ~Cheers~ :o)

Back home where I come from, a dock like this didn't mean nobody was home, nor was it a way to discourage visitors, it just meant that you were short on time, money and motivation to do anything about it until if disappeared completely. :-) I can see that the water often comes up a bit by the dip and length of the dock. Nice capture.

Both are good, but I think I prefer the bottom shot: all its elements seem to bring the viewer's eye to center, as opposed to the upper shot, which leads the eye away from it. Just my TwoCynts' worth... :]

Cool story, and a lovely shot.

Love the quotes and agree with you. There is something rather romantic and appealing about living isolated like that...for a little while,(like a weekend). But going longer than that without internet and electricity, etc. I think I'd start to develop a twitch, lol.Anyway, great shots,Kortalouche.Hope you and yours have a fabulous T-Day!-M :^) PS Lol at the new avatar.Poor Big Bird.I notice Miss Piggy is making herself scarce. Is that because xmas is just around the corner? ;^P

I agree with Zacko about the rules, and photography. You don't have to know but you have to feel. Nostalgic looking shots.

Composition like beauty is in the eye of the beholder!! More to do with how you feel about it, nice idea!! ;-)

You quote about composition is thought provoking and just when I think I know it all, I am surprized again. Excellent presentation. There was something disturbing to me in regard to the state of the brindge.

Great idea this upload,Kort... As nobody pointed it so far, and because we are reading from left to right, I have a slight preference for the upper image... but the "motion" is excellent in both ! :~)
BertDes
Two fantastic captures. Excellent.
creanum
nice frame and composition...

Stunning old dock! I bet there was a lt of history with it!

I love both shots, but I prefer the upper shot.
FriedaFelicia
Love the sense of lonliness in both two shots! The top one is my favourite.
babuci
Long long jetty, I love the top shot!
croxie
Both are great, but I like the first one better...have no clue why. And it's not easy to find locations like that. At least not when you have a camera around :) As for composition it's exactly what you said. Can be so many things.
goodoleboy
Nice atmospheric effect with the jetty/dock/wharf feeding into what seems to be nowhere. I like both photos, but prefer the upper shot because of its close proximity. Incidentally, I read somewhere there will soon be a movie released about the life of Diane Arbus, starring Nicole Kidman in the title role.

Would be interesting to see the what the dock led to..nice images..
