This photo was taken in 1968, in Iran, near the town of Maku, just across the border with Turkey. I was on my way East, a three-and-a-half months travel which ended in Kathmandu, Nepal. I was hitchhiking with a companion from Brighton, England, whom I met in Munich, Germany. I am sitting on the hood of this Mercedes, that would take us to Teheran. From there I travelled by any means available through Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal.
I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and I run a small literary publishing firm.

Nice photo! Are you sure it is 1000 years old? Well there is one sure way to find out - cut it down and count the rings. Just kidding. I have respect for anything living that long. Thanks

Verry impressive tree. Here in Swizerland (Emmental) we have also trees aged thousend and more years. We should respekt those old natures.

No doubt that a dendrologist has confirmed the tree's age by doing a core sampling which would enable one to count the rings without harming it. Thanks George for sharing this picture.

Near Austin Texas there was an oak of around a thousand years and someone tried to kill it. I do not remember if they was able to save or not, but I think not very beautiful tree and looks like a wrinkled up old man with swollen extremities
