Description

The African Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus Vocifer) has a very distinctive call, to my delight this one gave several cries after eating, reminding me of the distinctive sounds of Kenya (once heard it is never forgotten). It is particularly common in and around some of the Rift Valley lakes. Which I once had the pleasure of going for 3 months, on an expedition to study the ciclid fish. Acting as the Medic and photographer. Although, as its name suggests, it feeds extensively on fish, in some areas (eg Lake Bogoria) it preys on flamingos and other water birds. It is also known to eat carrion and is classified as a kleptoparasite ie it steals prey from other birds. Goliath Herons are known to lose a percentage of their catch to Fish Eagles. They are related to the American Bald Eagle when adult they have an almost pure white head, the totally different looking bird above, is the juvenile Fish Eagle. The appearance changes gradually over three or four years with the dark streaking on the breast being the last part of the juvenile plumage to vanish. I would estimate this bird to be around 3 years old..

One of the most characteristic sound you can just not ignore in Africa. You captured the detail very well. You were so lucky to get so close. This bird should be the equivalent of the lion in the sky.
