Description

He knows that Bruce Springsteen's Glory Days is the best rock song ever. He knows that John Mellencamp's Jack and Diane is the best love song ever, he even had it as the first dance at his wedding. He knows that Tom Cochrane's Big League is about him, in a way. He was the High School sports hero, won the games, went to college on a football scholarship. During a college game, he was blindsided, clipped at the knee and that ended his college football career. No games, no scholarship. He went home after that, not in disgrace, because he was the first in his family to get to college. His Dad got him a job at the Mill, he was working for a living now. A few years later he married his high school sweetheart. He settled down, became a man. The past thirty years have flown by so fast. He and his wife raised three great kids, he put them all through college, they moved away to big jobs in the city. He's almost paid off his mortgage, he has a house, a car, a pick up, and a boat. Saturday nights he goes out with his buddies from high school, they drink, they dream, they remember the good old days, when they were young, when their bodies didn't hurt. They remember, it seems like only yesterday, when they were young. Sundays, they gather, watch football on the TV, while the wives get together. After the game, they may play a game of touch football, or if it's winter, a game of Shinny. The bodies may be older, but the minds and hearts are still young. They remember those brief shining moments when they were gods, when everything looked bright. When the girls would smile, and adults cheered them on. Their Glory Days.

This is a concept I entertained while still in high school, why do I imagine you did too? There is a guy who walks around here at work, must be 46+? A heavy smoker, he obviously was a "Hunk" in his day... he still dress's like it's late 70's early 80's, his hair cut hasn't changed since 1981. I saw him walking out to the parking lot, and I expected him to get into a Jeep (I call him the Marlboro Man). Sure enough, he got into a jeep. Some people get trapped in time. I swore I never would. Though in many ways I suffer arrested development, as my wife puts it, I am a 13 year old with a mortgage. But I really don't pine much for those days. I hated high school, felt it was a daycare center, holding me back from my dreams. The only thing I really miss is Summer vacation.... sigh We also ran into a girl I knew in high school, a real punk rocker, form the hair to the boots. There she was 45? And still dressed the same, just older and fatter. Kind of sad really...
