Description
Sometime in the Night by Zoe Xanthippos
I was awakened by a thump. Propping myself up on one elbow, I glared at my cat in the dark, knowing it was she who had jumped on the bed. But in the faint glow from the window, I could see that Clare was sound asleep at the foot of the bed. Even that cat couldn't have gotten that still that quickly. Sighing, I rolled over and shut my eyes, putting it all off as only a dream. Just as I was drifting back to sleep, there was a whoosh of air and this time, a most definite thump as something landed on my left leg.
"Ouch!"
YOWL?
MEW!
This time I sat up in bed.
"What on earth are you doing here Daphne? Has something happened to Clio?"
There followed quite a lot of mewing and yowling, as Daphne was apparently telling Clare all about whatever was on her mind. I wished, not for the first time, that I could understand what the cats were saying. My mind still fogged with sleep, I tried to reason with myself. I had left Clio at the Aristophanes villa. With all the guards Kritias kept about the place, there was no way anyone could have gotten in there and done anything to her, and I knew she wouldn't have left in the middle of the night. But then what was Daphne doing here? Perhaps she had just gotten tired of watching Clio sleep?
"Okay, you two. Since you're not going to tell me what's up, there's no point in discussing it any further. If you have more to say to each other, please go someplace else. And since there's nothing that can be done about anything at this hour anyway, I'm going back to sleep.
