Description
Land Iguana (Conolophus subcristatus), South Plaza. The dorsal spines look like some sort of throwback to Stegosaurus, but the land iguanas have no real predators in the Galapagos and are under more serious threat from domestic animals, especially goats, and from unintentionally introduced species, such as rats and fire ants.

Can't count the number of b-rate fiction movies these guys have been forced to appear in. Lol A great capture! Curious how big this guy was? :B eaver !

I can't specifically recall how big this iguana was, but they varied from thirty to forty inches, I should think (a fair amount of that being the tail). Galapagos land iguanas are reputed to be the biggest, which makes sense, given the absence of crocodiles, jaguars and the like. Even so, the first iguanas I ever saw, in Chiapas, Mexico, gave the impression of being pretty substantial (males draped in trees, trying to entice the local females).
