Description

I don't know why but this shot just spoke to me. I didn't do any image manipulation or additional cropping, this is just how it came out. Speaking of pirates... Renderosity has removed my Eiffel Tower picture due to a copyright issue. I understand their reasons, even if I vehemently disagree. Because of this I would like to bring a grand theft to your attention!!! Did you know that for the evening hours of each day the Eiffel is STOLLEN from the public and that it is "supposedly unlawful" to take or publish a picture of the tower with the lights turned on? It doesn't matter that this is complete rubbish and that it simply cannot be and has not been upheld in France, much less anyplace else.
Eiffel Tower: Repossessed

The Eiffel Tower's likeness had long since been part of the public domain, when in 2003, it was abruptly repossessed by the city of Paris. That's the year that the SNTE, the company charged with maintaining the tower, adorned it with a distinctive lighting display, copyrighted the design, and in one feel swoop, reclaimed the nighttime image and likeness of the most popular monument on earth. In short: they changed the actual likeness of the tower, and then copyrighted that.
Wikipedia entry for the Eiffel Tower I understand that it isn't worth the hassle for Renderosity to fight this but I cannot help but think that if the art community does not protest this that only worse things will follow. I don't think we should let such stupidity as this kind of exist so easily! What's next? Some BOZO flies to the moon and paints a big smiley face on it and copyrights it? Thereby making all nighttime/moonlight picture copy written with fees to be paid for their use?!!! Sorry if this is a bit incoherent, I'm working with a 103+ temperature and a serious stomach bug. It's probably made me more crotchety than usual, and this was just NOT the news I needed today! :-) - Here are some of my other recent works (I sometimes post at odd hours, so you may have missed them the first time around): thumb_1352690.jpg thumb_1352173.jpg thumb_1351717.jpg thumb_1351322.jpg thumb_1350782.jpg thumb_1350098.jpg

lolol Boggles the mind! And doesn't surprise me. I had heard of the French doing this, but never heard of anyone doing anything about it. I know if you wanted to publish a picture of the Eiffel Tower you had to get permission and usually got it. What the fee is I don't know. The unions own France they control what goes on. SNTE (SociNouvelle d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel) is listed as a company, but in reality it is part of the union, usually it is when it has 'Soci. I know at one point they were having contract disputes with the City of Paris. Now, if you spend much time in France you will soon learn Paris does what it wants. lol damn the rest of the country! What I don't understand is why Rendo pulled your photo. You took it, it is your property, which you could have a copyright on, as long as you don't publish it for profit or exploitation. You didn't publish anything, posted a picture you took. I'm just wondering if it would hold up in a court of law. How do you copyright a public 'building' for a better word? lol Sorry it was pulled, it was a great picture.

I knew about this regulation on the Eiffel Tower but never heard of it being enforced since it is one of the most recognized likenesses in the world and if not for its popularity, it would not be such a big dollar draw around the world. Anyway, everyone I have talked to about this agrees its the goofiest thing they've heard of. BTW, this post here is great!

Once again, a great image. Simple in form, but evoking so much more. As to the Awful Tower bit, It's the French, what do you expect. Of course this from a country that thiks Quiche and the Maginot line are good ideas.

I really like this pic, maybe the contrast between the colors of the wood and the water. The whole Eiffel Tower thing is the stupidest thing I've heard of! I could almost understand it for people making money off the image, but if you aren't making money off of it you should be able to post the picture wherever you want...I would think that it would fall under the Fair Use Act (http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html). I guess I'm just mad because I didn't get to see your pic of the tower!!! Oh well, I'm sure that I'll get over it. Sorry to hear that you got sick on your trip, though...hope that you're all better soon!
