Description

Hi Y'All :o) Just something lighthearted and silly today. I know, the photo quality is awful...it was taken many moons ago with just a little cheapie camera, and I tried to doctor it up as much as possible, and it's still not that good, but thought y'all would enjoy a little Sunday chuckle. It was taken at the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge park just north of Ft. Lauderdale where I've spent many a happy and productive hour fishing...and yes, I love to fish ! (surprise,surprise)...just gimme a cane pole any day and I'm happy as a clam :o) Now the character perched atop the sign is a turkey vulture and my favorite bird...I know, weird huh, but I've long been a fan of all raptors, hence my name here, Nekhbet, which is the ancient Egyptian vulture Goddess. I was just very surprised to be able to get that close for a pic since they're very very shy and usually fly off long before you can get close enough to point n click. Now if you all can't live another moment without knowing more about turkey vultures, here's a coupla info sites: turkey vultures raptor center And another site with info about Loxahatchee, which by the way, means "river of turtles" in the native Indian language. It's a huge (app. 221 sq miles) and beautiful refuge and is part of the Everglades. loxahatchee Ok, I really do think I've droned on long enough, so here's hoping y'all have a fantastic day !!! ~ Love & Hugs ~ * Mina *

Along with eagles, vultures share duties as carrion eaters, an essential function. In short they are nature's trash collectors and are as necessary as the department of sanitation in any city. Once while bicycling down the California coast highway, I noted that several turkey vultures were circling over moi. They didn't realize that it'd be several years before I'd be ready to serve as their repast. Well, some days I'm readier than on others. :-) BTW ultimate recycling via vulture is a predominate part of the Tibetan "sky funeral." Thanks for posting this image of turkey vultures, a necessary part of nature dear Mina.

I love this photo, it's such a great shot! I look for them here every spring, their return flight brings them right over our house! It really makes me happy to see that others have an appreciation for Mother Nature's clean up crews, too.
