Description

Hi all, hope you had a great new year. First and foremost please do not judge Predatrons wonderful model by this substandard render, I just feel this is poor and will continue to change most of the shaders etc. But most of all the lighting, which I'm struggling with to get anything reasonable, this is a single sunlight in a volumetric atmosphere, I feel it has a good 3D feel to it and reasonable depth but with the lack of radiosity looks too shadowy and very grainy, also the light to dark is out of balance, but to be fair to Vue indoor lighting is a new implementation and would be harse to say anything bad about it, even the demo ones supplied with Vue couldn't shed any light (excuse the pun) on the problems I've had trying to get this right, so at 86hrs and mostly no internet I'll try again when I get the enthusiasm back. Anyway many thanks for looking and for any crits your care to leave. Chris

OK - first off - it is not poor. It's something not too long ago would have been at the top of the food chain. You're right in so far - that it isn't up to it's potential. The ceiling appears more like a drawing and the door area appears somewhat flat - as does the entire area that face the direct daylight. And exactly there I feel is the main source of the problem. Maybe a change of atmosphere (pun also intended) will help - maybe even the introduction of faint yellow/orange. It's what I hate about 3D work - you have to render for hours - just to find there are problems and you have to redo the whole stuff. But to get away from the negatives - the general setup and potential is already there and in place - find the right light and you're set. Cheers

I don't think this is poor. Realistic indoor lighting is very difficult, even with radiosity. Just an example: real light sources fade with distance, Vue 5 lights don't (may be Vue Infinite has the feature). Findig good radiosity settings is an art on it's own. May be you can further improve this scene, but I think it is really good already.

You're beating yourself up over practically nothing, C. If you are in a wide-windowed room like that lit only by sunlight, that's pretty much what you get. But in reality, the lounge would be supplemented by fluorescent lighting--therefore, a couple of tube lights might jazz your pic up more than radiosity would. Rembrandt would be first in line to tell you: radiosity in most cases is terribly overrated. (Beat. Steps off soapbox.) The model and textures look great.

I like the lighting and the room. I think maybe with darker shadows, the inside could be even more convincing than it is now. But I do consider this very realistic already. I know lighting is the hardest thing for me to do and I'm never happy with the results. 86 hours is definitely annoying. I know it's cheating but how about adding a bit of contrast in PS? Okay, I never said that!

Chris, I think this is close to perfect. I have made a request to e-on to allow the ability to adjust the intensity and color of indirect lighting shadows. I have found that by increasing artifical ambience I can reduce overly saturated shadows somewhat.

Hey Chris, I think it looks pretty dare good. Your to close to it. Overall it looks like a real space. If you pick it apart, sure you can find areas that can be worked on, but, my friend you can do that with any rendering. Keep up the good work!

You have expertise with lighting and I see nothing wrong with this image. I would not have believed this was Vue. It is so photo-realistic. Every last detail is convincing and the positioning of the image overall works perfectly. I'm astounded. Well done.

This looks really good Chris. You've done wonders with The Lounge, glad you liked it. I think the lighting for me is probably just a little too strong and tends to bleach out the scene, maybe it's me being picky though. Keep up the good work my friend and looking forward to the next image. Steve:)
