Description

Plain title, and boring image really unless you are a sword nut like me. I began work on a project to model a whack of different swords and scabbards to sell, perhaps the first in a series of history related weapons and armour. This is one of the migration era germanic swords. Definitly viking like, with is five lobed pommel, and rune engravings (two different furtharks though). This sword is an iron age, migration era germanic sword, a direct descendant of the roman spatha. It is the only one I did that has a steel edge welded to the otherwise pattern welded blade. The others are just all pattern welded. The guard and pommel are patter welded as well, though darker. Apparently that is done with different acids on real swords, and can protect against rust too. These are my favorite kind of blades. Really a barbarian weapon. Meant for hacking, not so much thrusting, but were wonders of their age. Some of the finest swords of their time and given the labour intensive process of fabricating pattern-welded swords, the smiths were much esteemed and rewarded accordingly. Okay probably too much info for some, but hey, if you love the swords, you love the history behind them. I'll probably post other blades here and there, but aside from mapping the scabbards (and remodeleing a few of them) most of the swords are done, mapped and textured. All textures are made within photoshop, though I think the detailing is limited, because I can't paint anything with my mouse. For some reason it won't let me, but its the tablet for my pen so that might be why. And I lost my damn pen! Anyways, thought some of you might be interested in the info. Took me eons to find some good nordic and saxon quotes to use on the blades, but I did find some. :P Enjoy! Swidhelm
