Description

The last time I was in the South Atlantic was over 25 years ago when the Rockhopper was both a comical and delightful sight and numbered in the tens of thousands.. From recent talks with a fellow wildlife photographer living on the Falkland Islands, it would seem that the Rockhopper Penguins, are in such precipitous decline that some experts consider them globally threatened. In the Falkland Islands, where hundreds of thousands of Rockhopper Penguins breed each year, the population has dropped by 30 percent in five years. This is a large drop, but the picture becomes even darker when you realize that the population is thought to have dropped by over 80 percent since the 1930s. Are we going to lose the charming and fascinating Rockhopper Penguin? (Lovelace, the colorful oracle penguin in the movie Happy Feet, is a Rockhopper Penguin.)

Fantastic clear and detailled shot. A beautiful animal, very well captured. Thanks for sharing. It is really alarming to read how the population of this Rockhoppers has been reduced.

Awesome capture - and extremely detailed as well. A beautiful animal. Too many species are endangered nowadays. And the measures we take are largely ineffective - the numbers show it pretty dramatically. Although some singled out species are better protected than others - the overall picture is way more than just alarming. It's a slap in our faces. But we get what we bargain for. We elect those demanding the least sacrifices from us, over those who ring the alarm bells.

Yes I recognized him immediately from the movie! My daughter Lo looks Happy Feet about 23 times a day... They could give some attention to this problem in a kind of post-credits scene of the movie.

Terrible to consider, loosing a peice of this fragil planets diverse ecosystem, esp. a part like this. An outstanding capture with unbelievable detail and range of tones, but the message is the star of this posting.

The signs of global warming are everywhere, but we are either too blind to see or too ignorant to care. With so many species threatened, it is our responsibility to heed mother natures call to arms. It would be a pity to lose another single species to extinction, such as this cute fellow. Brilliant shot Dan and message~ Aloha~

LOVELACE!!!! I just saw that 3D-animated movie "Happy Feet" and this fella look just like a penguin named Lovelace...voice by Robin Williams. A cute movie btw. And this photo is quite spectacular. The focus is dead on. Well done! #:o)

I saw the penguins at the Golden Globes. The same people who don't fix potholes and can cut 10% out of any budget are responsible (irresponsible) for this decline. Meanwhile doctors are playing God. When we begin laughing at the truth we don't become more human we become less.
