Description

The Eclipse . . . Stardate 8745.13 "Exploring a red giant in a nebula much more noted for new young stars . . ." Credits: Star background is a separate PovRay render (#1) using Chris Colefax's wonderful "galaxy" include code. Red Giant Sun is Daz Sudio primative sphere double rendered, once with noise for texture maps, then a second time with the 1st render's output as texture maps. (renders #2 & #3) Enterprize is my PoseRay wavefront obj convertion of Chris Guinn's Lightwave conversion of original Non-commercial use only 3Ds-R4 format model by Eric Peterson. Gvim edit of (.iff) to (.tiff) in .mtl file along with texture file renameing was required prior to DS import. A long journey to get this prop! Final render (#4) in Daz Studio with no postwork. (Several versions of the above process were done until the image you see was finally obtained.) All comments welcome, mcv

Dear Mike, Hmmm - I'm not so sure it's a good idea to be that close to a red giant. Not only is it going to be unstable and "breathing," and also pre-nova or pre-supernova, but it is likely to be a REAL magnetic mess. And then their is the tidal effects ifthey are inside the Roche limit!! BUT - since we are talking about a starship - that warps out of the neighborhood faster than the speed of light - they've obviously got a pretty good handle on space-time - so I figure they can shield themselves from probably everything - including gravity!!! And of course, you can make a pretty convincing argument that gravity IS space-time, so if you can manipulate one, you can manipute the other. SO - the Enterprise is probably not in any real danger!!! (That's a relief!!!) ;-) Really nice work on the nebula and on the red giant and on the white dwarf in the distance!!! And vry nice work in converting the Enterprise to OBJ format!! Very dramatic scene and suprb sci-fi work!!!!!! Love ya!!! Meredith Meredith Elaine Wilson - MeredithLand

Great space image - nice contrast with the darkness of the ship against that red glowing orb.
