Description
The year was 1862 or maybe 1878, it doesn't really matter now.
A sandy wash, 2 graves.
One large and one small.
Man or women and a child.
The names on the crosses have been sanded away.
The journey to wherever wasn't completed.
It stopped here.
Reason?
Indians, robbers, heatstroke or disease.
There is a lost story here, along with lost hopes and dreams.
This story was told thousands of times on these forays into the west, the new land.
For some this was adventure, for others, the end.
The drifting sands covers and uncovers these monuments to man.
Secrets, mysteries lie here, stories untold.
You will find these scattered along the trails.
Applegate Trail, Beckwourth Trail, Boseman Trail,
California Trail, Mormon Trail, Nevada Emigrant Trail, Nez Perce Trail, Overland trail.
Each one has their own stories of hardships, fears, experience and death.
Hopes and dreams of a new land, a better life, a fresh start.
Many made it.
Some just ended up in a sandy wash.

Such are the hidden places of the west. Once while hiking at the bottom a canyon in southeastern Utah, we found the leg of a horse caught up against a pile of debris probably caused by a flash flood. Excellent writing and picture Frank.

Neat but sad story. Very interesting area, and neat looking graves.
