Description

Red pandas have a bear-like body with thick russet fur. The belly and limbs are black and there are white markings on the side of the head and above the small eyes. They have what looks like black tear markings from each eye.. The thick bushy tails with light-brown rings, pointed ears and a pointed snout, has cast some doubt by some scientists if they may be more related to racoons but the evidence is far from clear. Red pandas lead solitary lives, except for mothers with cubs. They are slow-moving on the ground but are remarkably agile in the trees. This one was able to carry her cub from a tall tree going forwards with some ease.. The IUCN classify red pandas as Endangered, and they are on CITES: Appendix I. They are protected in Nepal and China. Habitat loss is thought to be the major reason for their decline in the wild.

These are such adorable creatures. You sure captured the cute-n-fuzzy aspect of them in this photo. Wonderful detail here, another full size viewing must. Keep up the great work on this important series.

I imagine if it were reversed how quickly we humans would decline without our habitats. This is such a great shot of mama and her cub. CC

I try many times to catch this red panda in several zoo, it's alway difficult because they are often in the trees, you have a chance to catch this one!

Very fine detail captured and and the furs look so realistic and touchable. Sad state that their habitat is also swallowed up by man...

Dan: Nice shot. As always, your patience pays off! I think of these pictures as sort of slice of life views. Grabbing animals doing the things we all too often miss reminds me to be conscious about stopping and observing the world on their scale, not mine. Being able to relate animal life and behaviour to mine reestablishes - and I don't mean I am anthropomorphising here - the fading connection that is foundational in the mindset leading to habitat destruction and decreased diversity that threads throughout, binding us all together. Note: For all interested in understanding habitat destruction as a primary force in our world, I recommend: Song of the Dodo, by David Quammen. It is a compelling book composed of one part travelogue, one part natural history text, one part historical story about Darwin and Wallace, that will keep you up reading all night long. I guarantee you will not be disappointed! Sam

It is a sad state of affairs when habitat is lost by our hands. At least I get to see this Panda! I have never seen this type though! Thanks for sharing! Excellent capture - hope you have a facial one too. ;-)

I admire you in many ways Danny. First you give us your wonderful photos, then you teach us so much we don't know about so many animals, and last but not least, you share your love and concern about our earth and those living on and of it. Thank you! Hugs!!

Woah! So clear - so detailed a shot - not to mention the moment it was captured. (Where it was captured, you left out, though, which would be interesting to hear!) Kudos - Look at my avatar - Today's salute goes to you! Hands down!

Why do I think "red panda" is a rape alert? I met one from Starke anyway. The terror stories about heroin withdrawal under cold turkey became simply small bad checks that were prosecuted to the maximum.

A marvelous and so cute little animal ! He looks between Fox and little Bear ;o)))) But this one is really one of the last of the Red Pandas... So sad to think about that. You've made a brilliant portrait of him Danny, the light on him make the details more impressive. And thank you for the large size... it's a wonder ! I love this fragile serie.... Hugs my friend

A marvelous image.. the red panda is a beautiful animal and in a way they look funny, just like their much bigger nephews. And a clever animal too.. one red panda of the Rotterdam Zoo managed to escape from his enclosures and was found back two kilometers away nearby the Rotterdam Central (railway) Station..hehehe.. whatever was this red panda up to..
