Description

NOTE: YOU WILL LOSE A LOT OF DETAIL IF YOU DO NOT ZOOM THE PICTURE. Pathfinder City started out mostly as a resort area--a rest and recreation station of just a few buildings for Martian Exploration Service personnel. It is called Pathfinder City, because is not too far from where the first Pathfinder robot landed. The site, now entirely covered by a huge museum building is out of sight to the left of the picture. Because of the area's historial importance, a tourism industry sprang up and the original station became a city of over 10,000 souls. Like all Martian cities, roughly 90 percent of it is underground. Ganges, a Mars Rover 6, and two of its three mules is parked in front of the local Martian Exploration Service's headquarters, while the third is headed off on an errand to another part of town. The MR-6 has a three person crew and room for a couple of extra personnel as needed. The Capri Mensa is one of three Mr-6s attached to the Spirit of Marineris, a huge mobile MES station. The latter is "passing by" 700 kilometers southwest of the city and won't be making a stop at Pathfinder City. The Ganges is in town to pick up some needed equipment and other supplies. The Ganges crew will only spend overnight in town. Tomorrow, they will be headed out on the long intercept course to the Marineris. Credits: Terrain: created in Bryce 6 using a photo taken by NASA's MRO satellite of the Pathfinder landing area. The same b&w photo was used to texture the terrain. Buildings and structures: Generators and storage tanks by Ed Baumgarten, as are all the single story dwellings. I "kaboshed" the latter to make larger, more complicated buildings and added my own textures. MR-6 and Mars Mule created by me in B6. The other vehicle is one that I created using Davo's "Ground Vehicle Construction Set" (DAZ). It was textured by me. Although you can't really tell even in the zoomed picture, the figure next to the far right mule is our good friend, Dwayne cole in the "Mars Suit for Victoria 3" by Lynn Jonathan (Renderosity). Thanks for taking a look and for all your comments. Jeremy

I love it wonderfull use of props and scenery and the scale is amazing, you really need to zoom in on the full sized view to appreciate it. It's a breathtaking view and goes so well with your story. Awesome and excellent work ^^

I LIKE it very very much. I read your account of this scene and have been studying it quite closely. This is a joy and a treat for the eye and mind. There is only one thing that bugged me right at the first and still does. It seems there should be some evidence of tracks in the sand from vehicles and people going about. Then it would be perfect!

I agree with you, Spain. Also at least a little dust raised by those vehicles that are in motion. I was worried about the amount of MBs raised by the latter (those volumetrics can really raise the ante) and if you'd had my history of late of crashing pictures, you'd be cautious too. Grin. As for tracks, there should be so many that the entire area would be nothing but tracks. Unfortunately, I've never figured out a way to add them to the terrain mat I use. If you are anybody else has some suggestions on how to go about that, I love to hear them. Thanks for your input.

The zoom is definitely needed! You can really see all the tiny details and all the work that went into creating this!

Great composition. The nearer terrain could have used a little more detail, though. I've tried creating tire tracks on terrain in Bryce 6 with a custom brush - with very mixed results.

Way Cool Jeremy... geirla is right, a custom brush in the terrain editor should give you some track detail. Look here for my lame attempt. http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1244030&member Don't mean to be a nag but IMHO because it's my Home Planet Mars, would'nt it look better done with a Sepia filter/effect? Just a thought...:)

Things dreams are made of dear friend. I wish I could see Mars up close and personal. Unlike sci-fi programs where tracks and trails last for 4000 years, films of the surface indicates constant winds and dust devils. Tracks may last a SOL or two, but depending on the season i doubt that explorers would be able to follow their own tracks home on any return trip. since there is no magnetic poles navigation would be unique. Perhaps a trail of bread crumbs would help?

I expect they would use some sort of GPS positioning, as we are beginning to do here on Earth, via overhead satellites.

Brilliant render, had to be zoomed to see all the details, would love to see a color version of it, its really excellent as it is though. Fantastic!

Actually I am working on a color version of it, but it doesn't help that the last two efforts crashed when I went to save them. I'm sorta holed up licking my wounds over that right now. However, I will go back to it soon.
