Description

Okay culture lovers...it's FIREBALL XL5. It is the mid 21st Century and space is patrolled by a fleet of sleek, powerful rocketships: the XL class. Finest of these is Fireball XL5, commanded by the heroic Steve Zodiac. With him are a robot pilot (Robert), his plucky platonic girlfriend Venus (and her annoying alien pet, Zoony the Lazoon), while Prof Matt Matic solves the problems with a genius brain (though he acts like a 'toot'...whatever the hell that is!). I downloaded this from a Gerry Anderson model site, but had to retexture it in Bryce. (Can't remember who built it sorry) The Earth is a an image wrapped around a sphere, with another sphere for the clouds, and a third for the atmospheric glow. The Moon is merely a PhotoShop planet/moon brush. Loved this series...daft though it was. Enjoy Iain (PS I'll get back to doing girls soon)

I remember the series and love it. Thanks to it, I discovered SF, Star Trek, and the other neat stuff that goes with it. I was at Dragoncon in Atlanta and saw a really detail metal model of the XL5 and really wanted it till I saw the price it was something $300, and I reluctatedly I walked on by..... Nice render!

LOL ! Wow this really takes me back! I remember seeing this as a kid when it first came out. I loved it and it helped get me hooked on Sci-Fi for the rest of my life! What was hysterical about XL5 was that it needed a ski-ramp to take off but it could land vtol-style. Never made sense to me..... Thanks for this! Very well done. 5

yup. I know it wasn't me, my model's not nearly this good. Only thing is the wings seem a little wide, I seem to remember them being a bit more 'stubby'..but that's nothing you could have done anything about..;) Great pic

The Andersons created shows that a lot of us remember fondly. Your image brings me back to when I first saw this show.

Yeah, the original ship had much shorter wings but as noted, that flaw is due to the software. Oh man, that was a great show! Some of the Space City models made their farewell appearances in DOPPLEGANGER aka JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN by getting blown up in the disastrous finale.
