Description

Yep! a hundred miles inland is a little black submrine half buried in the good ol' aussie outback! This replica of the HMAS Ottway on the side of the road (thankfully) in the town of Holbrook as a memorial to Admiral Holbrook who was the first Submarine commander to receive the VC. A link below gives a bit of insight into the appearance of this unusual roadside attraction. http://www.travelmate.com.au/Places/Places.asp?TownName=Holbrook_%5C_NSW It was an interesting place as there is an emerging museum there and some other submarine peices to have a look at and a glance at the visitors book provides names of seamen from afar who have come to check out the 'land locked Sub'. Enjoy. Please feel free to critique this, as this pic is on of a few contenders I am thinking of entering into a competition in the 'maritime' section later in the year at our camera club. There are a few different sections and comps and I am 'testing the waters' here for technical and general feedback so fire away (no pun intended here as the sub has no live weapons) Thanks for looking. Have a great day. Jenny

Great capture! Like the composition and perspective. My son is finishing submarine training in the US Navy...I'll have to send him a link!

Very cool...they have one like this near a sub base in Georgia that I visited last year. I bet a transplanted sub would make a great office/living space. :)

A very interesting find, but that link is misleading... it would have us believe this vessel is somehow connected with Admiral Holbrook's WW1 adventure. More likely, he commanded an E-Class boat and not an Oberon as is Otway. Anyone looking for a good submarine story should look into the allied sub ops in WW1... particularly the Dardenelles operations. Daring escapades which have a sense of Gilbert and Sullivan about them. Try: 'The Underwater War' by Edwyn Gray. I believe it's published in the UK as 'A Damned Un-English Weapon.' The companion volume on German ops is also an excellent read. Can't recall the title, same author. Check Amazon, eBay, etc. Thanks for your post. Always glad to look at real subs.

A realy cool image, it must be strange for people coming across this so far from water. While I ca see 'weesel's point I imagine there may be a shortage of E-class boats for a display such as this!.I am fortunate to live on the Mersey (Liverpool)we have a similar sub, veteran of the Falklands War and a U-Boat which may soon be going to private collections. It is always nice to see these craft preserved especially in such an unusual location and accesable to people who might otherwise not have the chance to see them.Good luck with the competition and I would love to see more shots of this fine craft. Thanks for sharing....
