I always wanted to do a space colony interior scene and this image really tested the limits of my feeble skills and Bryce 6's capabilities. You definitely want to go with full resolution on this one- but apologies for the quality, I had to go to 26% compression to get the size to the limit. There are over 20,500 objects (1,350,000 polygons). The copy of six train-stop villages (over 5,000 objects for the set) from one side of the colony to the other took ten hours (!) to complete - should have used mirrors. Copying only four apartment towers (about 2,500 objects) took 3 hours. That's why some of them are either missing or "under construction". Saving the file (only about 92 MB) takes over an hour and a half. And despite the population capacity listed below, there are only five low-res residents - at the train platform on the right. The entire scene is rendered in Bryce - no post but the signature. The concept is a hollowed-out cylinder (negative sphere and cylindrical "voids" make all the interior space and lighting is only from the tubes at the core). The materials are all derived from what came with Bryce 6 - with liberal use of the DTE. The cropland one, I toned down a lot to make it look real. The ponds come from a transparency I added to a grassy material that shows a water material below. Thanks for looking and commenting. --- Utopia One was the first NEAR colony, carved from a metal rich asteroid that orbited between the Earth and Mars. Twenty years after Anton Nedelin's corporation put the first drill into the surface of a rock whose name he and the IAU argued vehemently over, the habitable interior was ready for its first residents and Nedelin was a trillionaire from the metals he extracted. The interior space was nearly two kilometers long and a kilometer wide, though slag rock left for structural integrity and shielding set the habitable surface 430 meters from the spin axis. It was a small habitat by later standards, but it would easily house twenty thousand people in great comfort.

Excellent interior of a cylindrical habitat. reminds me of B5's interior :) Using the L x pi x r2, your hollowed out asteroid habitat-colony's interior is approximately 112.199737 displacement tons, and 6.283185sq km of habitable area. fantastic! I've been working up for the Traveller RPG game an improved & comprehensive way of figuring out from a 1983 article from JTAS (Journal of Traveller Aid Society) quarterly magazine they produced but his formulae didn't include length, only habitable area in square km. The Author did allow that stations were much cheaper and easier to build than starships, as they used rotational force for gravity, and didn't travel (stationary, within a system, albeit they could be towed to where they would be emplaced).Yes, they will cost in the Billions & trillions., but they are the stuff of SF and much writing on why, and how they come to be, as well as the culture of those who live upon them evolves in various forms. Awesome work. By the way, geirla, in figuring out his population/ per square km, the author of the '83 article used a base of 150 sq meters per human-sized sophont, reduced through technology advancements -5 m2 per. At the earliest technological level that was 6700 persons/ km2, and at highest technological level, 8000 / km2. Travelling onwards now, da 'Rotter
