Description

I know this page is technically about photography but the Baobab is bound to raise some controversy. I was met by many comments about the trunk being hollow housing a pub of all things. This has been bothering me too but let me try and explain the facts very briefly:  The baobab is biologically very different from an ordinary tree in that it has no core and its wood consists of fibers high in water content, resembling decaying willow wood but much more dense than a succulent. Some trees become hollow on the inside as part of a natural process without hampering its growth. Secondly the idea to have a pub inside comes from the days when the Lowveld was like the pioneering of the American Wild West. The first facilities established in a "town" used to be the watering hole which was also the chemist/drug store and ammunition dealer, not just a pub - so I am told.
The last controversy is size: I used the word "allegedly" the biggest because there are 3 trees being mentioned as the biggest and the fact giving rise to this discrepancy has to do with the height at which the circumference is measured around the trunk and some people use "size" as synonymous with "height".
The first photo shows the massive trunk and the door, then the pub on the inside and the bottom right shows a small "lounge" next door.
This tree is estimated to be 6000 years of age!
My previous two uploads of the "biggest" trees:

Regardless of what establishment has taken residence here, the tree itself is a magnificent wonder of nature. Me, I'd make a small chapel in it rather than a pub. :-)

Unbelievable! There is a huge Baobab tree like this in Sarasota, Florida at the Ringling Museum...or was that the mansion...anyhoo, it is huge. Not sure if a pub could go inside though. This one is super!

I was not worry of them cutting out a tree. they cut out a big hole for a road in a red wood tree so why not. But I see they did not do that and I sure the beer is good here. or what ever you drink[tea for me]. I like this tree a LOT AND THE SHOTS OF IT IS SUPER. i WOULD HAVE Never know about this if you did not post it

I've been one year in Senegal, with a lot of Baobab around. Be careful, there is a Djinn in every Baobab :)

Wow!! The ultimate tree house!!! Maybe this is where the idea of Pooh's hundred acre wood came from. Sure makes sense to me. Question, is it cool inside? Approx how many people can be in here comfortably? I love shots like this, its so interesting. Thank you for the information this is soooooooooo cool!
