Description

The largest raptor that can be seen in the British Isles, and without doubt the most magestic, sad to say I have not been able to get close enough as yet to capture one in flight with its wing span over 8 feet!!.. Widespread in Scotland and the Lake District in the 18th Century, the species was wiped out by persecution and became extinct in Britain by 1916. A series of re-introduction programs from 1975 onwards to the Island of Rhum in the Inner Hebrides, resulted in the first successful breeding in 1985. Birds are now more scattered along the west coast of Scotland. In 1992 a re-introduction programme was initiated on the west coast of Ireland. Scandinavian birds are seen less than annually in the east of England. A pair have been breeding on the Island Of Mull and was featured in Springwatch on UK TV this kind of fame leaves me rather nervous of the nest getting raided, but at the same time the interest has meant that 24 hour watches on the birds, and it is illegal to photograph breeding pairs without a license..

They always look so mean! Nice one Dan. You say you can not get close enough for an in flight, yet I would think with that wingspan you need to be distant. I am sure this will come with persistence. Glad you have the care for the well being of those ones breeding. They had that eagle cam here, and at least it was done without any disturbance or people gathering around, save the internet.
