Description

The mysterious decline of the Black-veined White has been the subject of discussion amongst entomologists for over a century. This impressive butterfly became extinct in Britain in the 1920s. Since then, many reintroductions have been attempted, all of which have failed. It is a large species with a powerful, soaring flight. When they become worn, the wings look like parchment patterned with distinctive black veins. So as this was taken in Wiltshire either I am wrong in the identification or this or is a very rare find indeed!! I captured this one first thing in the morning whilst it was covered in dew..

The wings have some transparency already... superb macro, especially the dew. Perhaps you should show this to your local entomological society! Outstanding, as always.

A very fortunate and extremely unlikely find Danny -- CONGRATS! A beautiful photo of this rare butty. Unfortunately, though we may try to save them, some species are just destined to become extinct, despite our best efforts.

"Magnifique" !!! I'm not so sad for this butterfly because we can find it commonly in the south of France, in Spain and north Africa; But it is effectively noted as extinct in Britanny... http://www.ariege.com/wildlife-report/2006/may06.html http://www.answers.com/topic/black-veined-white

Well since it is extinct in the UK - you can't possibly have... Or should someone have erred? Great Macro! Just superb!

Beautiful capture of a most spectacular butterfly. The rarity of its finding makes for a more valuable image. The vibrant pink flower highlights the black and translucent-white contrast in the wings exposing their uniqueness and beauty. Great POV. The downward facing flower and ascending fore-legs creates a wonderful visual experience. Thank you for sharing.
